John Taj Neville

I hold a BFA in drawing and painting from UNC–Chapel Hill and have worked professionally building furniture and cabinetry since 2008. I apprenticed with my father before working in several respected furniture and cabinet shops across central North Carolina. In 2014, I founded Neville Fabrication, making custom furniture for clients throughout the Piedmont and beyond. I’m interested in how furniture supports the ordinary, but important parts of life: gathering around a table, settling into a chair, sharing a conversation, or taking a quiet moment with a book or coffee. I draw on vernacular furniture forms, shaping them through the materials, processes, and joinery I know best.

I source lumber as locally as possible. For legs, stretchers, and spindles, I look for straight grain that can provide strength and long service. For seats and tabletops, I’m more open to expressive boards, natural variation, and repair. Painted furniture also has a place in my work when it suits the piece.
